Reseeding in lawn care
A must for a healthy lawn
ports grounds and green spaces are not only places where people meet and compete, they are also stress tests for the turf. The more intensive the use, the more damage occurs. Reseeding helps to keep the turf healthy, safe to play on and attractive. Autumn is the ideal time.
Constant use leads to compaction, wear and damage to the turf. Especially after an intensive playing season, bare patches often develop, which not only look unsightly but also increase the risk of injury. This is where reseeding comes into play: by introducing new grass seed, these gaps can be closed and the turf surface regenerated. There are four advantages.
1. improvement in turf quality: fresh seed promotes the growth of new, strong grasses that make the turf denser and more resistant.
2. improvement in playing quality: A dense turf ensures a more even and therefore safer playing surface. The risk of injury due to unevenness is minimised.
3. aesthetic enhancement: A dense, evenly green turf not only looks better, but also gives a well-kept impression – important for clubs.
4. longer-term maintenance: reseeding keeps the lawn vital and better able to defend itself against weeds and diseases.
Optimum timing
In principle, sowing should take place when the need arises. The best times are spring and autumn. This is when the soil temperatures are right and there is enough moisture for the seeds to germinate. There is also less competition from wild herbs, so that the new grasses can develop better.
For reseeding, the soil should first be loosened and aerated if necessary to improve seed uptake. The seeds are then evenly distributed and lightly worked in. A thin layer of sand protects against drying out and hungry birds. Regular watering is important to ensure germination and growth.
There are special machines for this package of measures, which are usually used with compact tractors, including the Terra Seed from German manufacturer Wiedenmann. Cost-conscious greenkeepers like to use combination machines. Wiedenmann, one of the big players in the industry, has both in its programme.
Efficient combi units

Re-seeding can also be carried out immediately after de-felting.The Terra Rake is suitable for both. The Airdos metering system can also be used.Wiedenmann has been offering this configuration for a few weeks now.The pneumatic seeding unit has no influence on the harrow result, as it is fully supported by the machine’s running wheels. With optimum care, the natural turf remains in top condition in the long term and offers the best conditions for users.
