Lawn Care in Winter
Two Machines for the Transitional Season
When the lawn’s growth phase ends in autumn, groundskeepers, facility managers, and landscape maintenance professionals begin the crucial regeneration work. The turf must be prepared for winter to ensure it remains dense, resilient, and vigorous in the coming season. Especially during this transitional period, the right combination of aeration, dethatching, and soil improvement is essential.
The Swabian machinery manufacturer Wiedenmann now offers two practical solutions for this purpose: the Terra V-Cut verticutter and the Terra Core 8 aerator. Both units were introduced at the latest Demopark and received such strong interest that deliveries were moved forward.
“Autumn maintenance determines the quality of the lawn in the following spring,” says Wiedenmann’s turf specialist Volker Zippel. “With these new machines, we give professionals the tools they need to optimally prepare for the vegetation resting period—efficiently, precisely, and gently on the turf.” While the Terra V-Cut removes thatch and dead material, the Terra Core 8 provides consistent aeration and water drainage in the upper soil layers. Together, the machines complement each other perfectly for year-round lawn care.
Systematic Verticutting
The new Terra V-Cut attachment verticutter was specially developed for professional use on sports fields, golf courses, and municipal green spaces. Its star-shaped blades rotate in the driving direction and create five clean cuts per revolution. This precisely opens the turf and efficiently ejects thatch toward the rear.
A particular advantage is the gentle working process: the blades rotate in such a way that they cut into the soil with their direction of rotation. The soil itself acts as a natural counter-blade. This results in smooth, precise cut surfaces that suffer minimal damage and regenerate significantly faster. The rotor’s low power requirement further supports this gentle intervention. The stepless depth adjustment via two lateral fine-thread spindles enables precise work down to a depth of 40 mm—completely without tools. With working widths of 150 and 200 cm, optional Dura Blade knives with carbide tips, and an additional wheel set for improved ground adaptation, the Terra V-Cut is equipped for a wide range of requirements. Its robust construction ensures durability and low maintenance.
Aeration for Vital Soil
With the Terra Core 8, Wiedenmann expands its product range with a compact aerator for the upper soil layers. The tractor-mounted unit for compact tractors works at depths of up to 100 mm, adjustable in 5-mm increments. Producing 270 to 820 holes per square meter, it ensures an even, square hole pattern—ideal for promoting gas exchange, water drainage, and root growth. The proven Vibra-Stop system reduces vibration for both the carrier vehicle and the operator, allowing smooth, precise work even over longer periods. Optional accessories such as a rear roller, windrow kit, and tool holders allow the machine to be adapted flexibly to various maintenance goals.
These two new products demonstrate that even established processes such as verticutting and aeration can be made more efficient—through optimized blade geometry, smooth-running drives, and tool-free adjustment systems. For greenkeepers and sports field managers, this means less downtime, lower energy consumption, and sustainably maintained turf that withstands winter conditions well.
