Green Spaces Between Drought Stress and Heavy Rain
Climate Resilience Starts in the Soil
The resilience of turf and green spaces is not determined at the surface, but primarily within the first few centimeters of the rootzone: this is where everything begins.
Periods of drought, heavy rainfall events, and increasing demands for biodiversity are fundamentally changing professional turf and green space management. While visible vegetation maintenance was long the primary focus, attention is now increasingly shifting to soil conditions. Whether on sports fields, golf courses, parks, or municipal green areas, soil compaction is among the most common causes of turf health problems. Compaction impedes water infiltration, restricts air exchange, and limits root growth. The consequences become particularly apparent during dry periods. Surfaces lose resilience while irrigation requirements increase.
This development is creating new demands for manufacturers of turf maintenance equipment. High area coverage and wide working widths alone are no longer sufficient. Instead, the market is looking for solutions that actively contribute to the regeneration and long-term stability of green spaces. Companies such as Wiedenmann are therefore placing greater emphasis on technologies for soil aeration, deep decompaction, and turf regeneration. Machines in the Terra Core and Terra Spike product ranges are designed to reduce soil compaction and strengthen the soil’s natural functions.
Resilient Plants as the Goal
The upper 10 centimeters of the turf profile play a particularly important role in water and gas exchange. The Terra Core 6 and 8 models are designed for regular aerification and improve permeability within this critical soil layer. They are complemented by the self-propelled Terra Core M6, the latest addition to the range, which reaches depths of up to 15 centimeters. For deeper compaction layers (up to approximately 40 cm), specialized equipment is available to access and loosen the lower root zone. This sustainably improves water infiltration, air exchange, and root development. Particularly on heavily used sports fields, golf courses, and municipal green areas, this creates a comprehensive maintenance concept ranging from surface aerification to deep soil loosening.
Mechanics Instead of Fertilizer
Biodiversity is also influencing maintenance strategies. Species-rich and resilient plant communities require functional soil structures in order to establish themselves over the long term. Rather than relying solely on irrigation or fertilization, measures that enhance natural soil functions are becoming increasingly important. A well-aerated soil that allows unrestricted root development provides the foundation for this approach.
These developments reflect a fundamental shift within the industry. Green space management is increasingly being viewed as an integral part of climate adaptation. The objective is no longer merely to achieve a visually perfect surface, but to create robust and sustainable vegetation capable of coping with drought, heavy rainfall, and intensive use—while simultaneously reducing maintenance requirements.
